Helping Your Children Adjust to the Move

It’s time to make the big move. Unfortunately, your children don’t want to go with you.

No surprise here.

Children like consistency. They like routine. They want to keep the same friends and go to the same school. And moving does anything but give them the security they need. But what if you could ease the journey and help them to see the positives, get them geared up, and even helpful, in the process of your new life together?

Here are some helps:

  • Let them pack and label their own stuff.  Get them involved in as much of the move as possible.
  • If you’re not moving too far, especially if you’re moving within the same city, spend a Saturday around the new area in which you’ll be living. Spend some time at the local park, visit the school, and get your children comfortable with the neighborhood.
  • If the move is quite a distance, prepare for the move by showing your children pictures of the house, what their rooms look like, how big the yard is and so on.
  • Peruse information on ForRent.com. Ease your children’s concerns by knowing the answers to their questions. Let them express their concerns and worries and assure them that you understand.
  • Stay positive. When things get tough, and they will, stand on a positive plane. Let your children know that moving is tough but that your family can be tougher.

In the end, as in new beginnings, remaining positive and allowing your children their own thoughts and feelings will prepare them the most for the anticipated move.
